What is that one thing in your life?
I wrote yesterday about how what’s shiny usually doesn’t work. However, that desire for shiny objects does not restrict itself to hoping for new and easier methods. We are also drawn strongly to new things in life. We want new stimulants that can keep things fresh and us excited.
I still remember a few years ago when I was a fan of David Beckham. I was never a soccer fan, but watching Beckham playing soccer is simply a thing of beauty. There is much to be said about how effortless he makes everything looks. No doubt Beckham has fulfilled his “10 000 hour” rule. Countless repetitions and hours put in later, he became one of the best in the world.
Yet most of us never master anything. To take that even further, I think many of us never quite get highly competent at any skill set. I think many of us have the experience of being competent at something. It could be playing the piano or some sports. But we never reach world-class level. Why?
Perhaps it has something to do with our talent level. There may exist an inherent ceiling that limits how far we can go. But how about another likely scenario- we simply got attracted to the next shiny thing and moved on. There is nothing wrong with attempting new endeavors- they help to keep life interesting and fresh. However, when we jump from place to place too much, we are missing the opportunity to dig deep. And I believe that’s where life’s beauty comes from- the ability to dig deep and understand the intricacies of something.
What lenses do you want to wear in life?
I think it is clear that the masters see details that the average man has no idea of. I often think of life as a palette of colors- the master is the one who can experience the vivid details of life. For the majority though, we are left with a rather dull and bland taste.
So what will the one thing of your life be?
Sticking to something for the long term, and digging really deep- these are skill sets that we can develop. Will we ever reach mastery? I can’t say for sure, but I also know we will never know till we do it.
